This particular bench, made of wood carved in the twentieth century, is an artifact from the city of Brienz in Switzerland. The type of artifact is called "Black Forest", from the area located in southwestern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. By the end of the 19th century, the wood carvings with subjects recalling the wildlife and flora of the Black Forest woods, made by the skilled carvers of Brienz, had become much in demand and appreciated and became a sign of wealth and luxury. Some objects of the Black Forest are preserved in royal collections or in the houses of great collectors. Quickly, the charm of these wooden sculptures spread to America, where they received a strong demand. This bench consists of a seat with armrests and backrest carved in the shape of trunks and tree branches intertwined with each other, phytomorphic elements and in the center of the backrest the figure of a brown bear that with its front legs grabs two branches. Two large bears in an upright position with their front legs supporting the seat, turning their snouts forward. The bench is very decorative and suitable for modern or rustic environments, mountain or country, or to be placed in terraces and gardens overlooking the green. It can also be designed for a tavern, a hall or a porch. It preserves and testifies the charm that the enchanting environment of the Black Forest exerts on man, already appreciated in ancient times.
