"Antique African Mask - Tribal Art - Dan Fire Mask "zapkai Ge" - Ivory Coast / Liberia"
First half of the 20th century Ivory Coast / Liberia Private collection - France, collected in Ivory Coast between the years 1950 and 1955 Originating from the ritual traditions of the Dan people, this Zapkai ge mask is a rare witness to the initiation rituals linked to fire, where the wearers defied the flames and heat under the gaze of elders and members of the Poro secret society. A ritual fire mask: Zapkai ge Zapkai ge masks were worn during spectacular performances where initiates demonstrated their resistance to fire, manipulating embers or walking on flames without burning themselves. These tests were manifestations of spiritual power and self-control, reserved for the most seasoned members of the initiation group. Unlike the Gunye ge (racing masks) and the Zakpai ge (disciplinary masks), the Zapkai ge occupied a special place, staging the courage and connection between the wearer and the spirits of the forest. Stylistic and ethnographic characteristics Carved from hard wood and patinated by use, this mask presents a typical aesthetic of Dan art, with some notable features that confirm its specific function: • Narrow and oblique eye openings, allowing the wearer to move with restricted visibility, a frequent element in night rituals. • Animal hair fixed under the nose, an unusual detail that could reinforce the mystical aspect of the mask and its ritual function. • Remains of red fabric, visible on the back of the mask, suggesting that it was possibly entirely covered in red textile at the time. This textile covering could have reinforced its visual impact during night ceremonies and accentuated its association with fire. • Riveted metal band on the axis of the face, a unique addition that could either be an old repair or a symbolic personalization specific to its wearer. The whole exudes a raw power, accentuated by the patina, probably obtained by repeated contact with smoke and flames during ceremonies. An authentic piece with proven ritual use The pronounced wear, traces of internal use and deep patina confirm its antiquity and its role in real initiation rites. Unlike contemporary productions intended for the art market, this mask was handled, worn and used in a spiritual context. Dimensions Height: 24 cm Delivery via DHL Express only
