Object description :

"Clock With Buffalo And Loot In Patinated And Gilded Bronze, Mid-18th Century. "
Patinated bronze buffalo clock resting on a gilt bronze rocaille base, vermilion and brown lacquered with foliage decoration. The buffalo carries a circular dial on its back. The white enameled dial, with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, has a vermilion lacquered case topped with a patinated bronze magot. On either side of the dial, bronze heads in the Chinese style appear.
Period: Mid-18th century. Louis XV period. Circa 1760.
This clock is characteristic of the taste for China mixed with Western forms, which developed in the 18th century. These fanciful pieces were prized by the court of Louis XV and in particular by Madame de Pompadour whose passion for "chinoiseries" is well known. This type of animal clock "is limited to the reign of Louis XV even if production will continue in a Transition style until the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI". Pierre Kjellberg.
