George V sterling silver sugar basin with floral band decoration, Birmingham 1915
This finely crafted sterling silver sugar basin dates to the George V era and was made by the respected silversmiths S. W. Smith & Co. Hallmarked at the Birmingham assay office in 1915, it is an excellent example of early 20th-century British silverware.
The bowl features an elegant circular form with an everted rim and a stepped pedestal foot. The body is embellished with two high-relief bands in a classical floral and geometric motif, lending a refined decorative style while maintaining a timeless, minimal aesthetic. The high-polish surface contrasts beautifully with the raised decoration, giving the piece a striking visual balance.
The generous size and heavy gauge of silver make this an unusually weighty piece for its type, with a versatile design suitable for a variety of uses. Originally intended as a sugar basin, it would also serve perfectly as a bonbon dish, nut bowl, or elegant tabletop accent in any refined interior.
