"Wardrobe From The First Half Of The 18th Century. Oak And Walnut Wood. "
Wardrobe from the first half of the 18th century. Oak and walnut wood.
Oak and walnut wardrobe, decorated with a large number of carvings and moldings. With an architectural structure inspired by contemporary Baroque architecture, it is organized in two rows and three registers, and ends at the top with a projecting cornice with a sinuous central pediment. The entire structure appears rigorously organized by regular straight lines, which emphasize the differentiation of each of the parts of the structure, according to a clearly classical criterion, typical of the Baroque even in its most ornamental aspects, according to which the decoration must always adapt to the structure, without ever going beyond it, so that its main lines are perfectly legible, as well as the relationship of proportion and balance of the parts between them and in relation to the whole. Following this idea, the façade is divided into two parts and three registers, which continue on the sides, with molded niches in this case, without the sculpture visible on the façade, but emphasized by the work of volumes and contrasts of light, typically Baroque, achieved through the simple use of moldings and steps. In the lower register we see two doors, each with its lock with an escutcheon cut with a double fleur-de-lis. Its design is organized around a central mixtilinear niche, typically Baroque, carved inside a rocaille crest that already tells us about the knowledge of Rococo, although in the furniture, both structurally and ornamentally, the Baroque language still dominates. The perimeter of the niches and projections of this central niche is repeated, with increasingly complex lines, traced on the basis of moldings in great relief compared to the background, which provide the contrast and chiaroscuro typical of Baroque furniture. Furthermore, the central area is highlighted by very swollen carvings based on plant scrolls, scallops and rocaille crests. The middle register, which still visually belongs to the lower body, houses two drawers of the same size and design, which combine diamond-point recesses with gilded fittings decorated with chiseling. Finally, the upper body also has two doors, like the lower door with its locks, and in fact follows a similar ornamental scheme to that of the lower doors, although more developed and with a vertical design. There are also rocailles and vegetal crosspieces, combined with an abundant molding with dynamic lines, typically Baroque. As a final touch, under the cornice and in the central area, a stepped motif appears that is organized around the lines of two sinuous pediments, combined with carved floral and classical motifs. -
