"Ayutthaya Style Crowned Buddha"
Gilt bronze statue of the historical crowned Buddha from the Rattanakosin period, inspired by the Ayutthaya style, 19th century. Crowned Buddha representations in Thailand are documented since the Ayutthaya period, which began in the 14th century. This style was then revived and enriched during the Rattanakosin period, starting in the late 18th century. This type of double-gesture Buddha is unknown in the Buddhist diaspora, it seems to have originated in the art of the Mon-Dvaravati regions from the end of the first millennium. This unique Mon representation was then adopted by the Thais and became a favored form for representing the Buddha. The finesse of the casting highlights delicate details and nuanced gilding, with oxidation of the bronze that adds depth and authenticity. The hands in abhaya mudra symbolize fearlessness and protection, characteristics of Thai Buddhist art.
