"Aeneas and the Cumaean Sibyl" shows a group of figures around the prophetess who is performing divination. This painting tells a famous episode from the Aeneid in which the gods allow Aeneas to go to the Underworld to retrieve his father's soul (Aeneid, VI, v. 269-282). Aeneas, after consulting her, is led by the Cumaean Sibyl who will guide him into the flaming world of the Underworld. In his right hand, he holds the golden branch that allows him to enter the kingdom of Hades.
