Superb set of 3 abstract drawings by the contemporary artist Nicolas MAFFRE, all 3 signed and dated 2012 on 3 superimposed lines in a stylized cartouche at right bottom: "M MA... FFRE... 2012
The artist first tore his thick sheets of paper (heavy weight) and then glued the pieces back together precisely before starting his drawings. Greasy chalk technique
Abstract designs consist of superimposition of multiple geometric shapes: in particular, the many round shapes in first ground sometimes cover other geometric shapes as if these bubbles were passing in front of them, like bubbles in carbonated water or planets or celestial bodies in the cosmos.
The artist has also subtly worked on the play of shadows and color contrasts in order to create a strong multi-dimensionality. The graphic construction on a plain light background gives the impression of extreme lightness, like bubbles of sparkling water or planets suspended in a cosmos. The very progressive colour flats are reminiscent of rich gradations of Mark ROTHKO's American Abstract Expressionist painting.
Dimensions
