Candlesticks in Art du Poilu – 1914-1918

Pair of candlesticks made from engraved shell casings and mounted on finely carved WOODEN bases.
A moving testimony to the Trench Art of the First World War.
Each piece is finely decorated with figures, landscapes, floral motifs, mythological elements as well as a caduceus-style frieze. The dates “1914 - 1918” are engraved on the bases, recalling their historical context.

Art du Poilu, or “Trench Art”, refers to the objects made by soldiers during the war, using the materials at their disposal, in particular brass ammunition casings.

These creations were often made to pass the time, to chat with their comrades or to send as souvenirs to their loved ones.

Condition: Some small losses on the bases: on one, an openwork arch is missing; on the other, a small lack is visible on the lower edge of the base.
