Biography:
Jean Jules SALMSON 1823/1902

Sculptor and medalist, born in Paris on July 18, 1823 died on May 7, 1902. French School; Jules Salmson is the son of Jean-Baptiste Salmson (sv) (1807-1866), engraver of medals and fine stones of Swedish origin, settled in Paris in 1822. His cousin was the painter Hugo Salmson (1843-1894).
He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a student of Jules Ramey, Armand Toussaint and Auguste Dumont. In 1845, he won the sculpture essay competition on the subject of L'Effroi. In 1846, he competed for the second essay of the Grand Prix de Rome but destroyed the work as he was not satisfied. He made his debut at the Salon of 1859; second class medal in 1863 and in 1867, knight of the Legion of Honor the same year.
In 1876, he was called by the Geneva government to the Direction of the School of Fine Industrial Arts, he demonstrated the most serious artistic and administrative qualities and contributed powerfully to the success of this establishment. In 1891, he was appointed corresponding member of the Institut de France. Among his works are La Prudence, statue for the Commercial Court of Paris (1865) – Henri IV plaster bust for the City Hall of La Rochelle (1876) - Handel, statue for the Opéra Garnier in Paris – Monument of HB de Saussure and Balmat in Chamonix (1887) – Caryatids of the Théâtre de Vaudeville in Paris (La Folie, La Comédie, La Satire, La Musique) – La Gloire for the new Louvre palace La Dévideuse, statue in bronze in Luxembourg – Model of a statue of JJ Rousseau at the Municipal Museum of Geneva.
He is also responsible for the fireplace in the foyer of the Geneva theatre. In 1892, he published an illustrated volume: Entre deux coups de scies, souvenirs d’un sculpteur. He is the master of many sculptors including Émile-Coriolan Guillemin, André Paul Arthur Massoulle, Jean-Louis Grégoire, Henri Lebossé, Vincent Desiré Faure de Broussé (1876-1908). Source Bénézit Awards: 2nd class medal in 1863. 2nd class medal in 1865. 2nd class medal at the 1867 Universal Exhibition. Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1867. Silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
Works in Museums and Public Spaces: Angers, Museum of Fine Arts: Les Titans, 1889, plaster, current location unknown. The Titans, 1895, bronze bas-relief. Chamonix: Monument to Saussure and Balmat, 1887, bronze group. Clermont-Ferrand, Roger-Quilliot art museum: Hope, 1865, bronze. Nérac, castle museum: Henri IV (plaster) exhibited at the salon in 1876 Paris: Orsay museum: La Dévideuse, Salon of 1863, bronze statue. Garnier opera: Handel, 1887-1888, marble statue. Roubaix, La Piscine: Handel, 1874, plaster statue, model of the marble of the Garnier opera.
