Jean-Baptiste Berlot (1775-1836), a student of Hubert Robert, was an artist who made his mark with his works of architecture and picturesque scenes, often in small formats.
This painting is highly representative of his work on interiors of churches and abbeys. Dated and signed at the bottom right, it depicts a scene of devotion featuring a Saint-Jacques pilgrim and a monk praying before a statue of Saint Anne.
Exhibited at the Salon of Paris from 1804, Berlot continued to participate in these exhibitions until 1836 and also submitted works to provincial salons, particularly in the north of France and in Toulouse.
