"Engraving - Cavalry School - 18th Century (circa 1735)"
PropertiesView / Product This engraving is an original 18th-century print from the work "École de Cavalerie" by François Robichon de La Guérinière (1688-1751), a fundamental equestrian treatise published in 1733, which remains a major reference in the history of classical horsemanship. In the foreground, a carved stone base bears the inscription "École de Cavalerie" in capital letters. A large draped purple curtain, like a theatrical set, frames the scene, giving a majestic and solemn effect. In the background, an equestrian training scene takes place under a vast arcaded architecture, evoking a covered riding school. Several uniformed riders are depicted: An instructor in a red coat, a symbol of authority and discipline, a rider in a blue coat, performing a dressage movement on his horse. In the background, figures balancing on horses, representing high school exercises, probably inspired by military and academic riding methods. After Charles PARROCEL (C. Parrocel inv.), painter and illustrator specializing in military and equestrian scenes. Engraved by Benoît Audran (B. Audran Sculp.), a renowned master engraver of the 18th century. François Robichon de La Guérinière is considered the father of modern horse riding. His treatise "École de Cavalerie" laid the foundations of academic horsemanship, the principles of which are still in use in prestigious schools such as the Cadre Noir of Saumur or the Spanish School of Vienna. This engraving illustrates the dressage and haute école exercises, essential in the training of military and aristocratic riders of the 18th century. This rare and precious print, at the same time a historical, artistic and technical testimony on the equestrian art under the Ancien Régime.
