A painting of the same subject (see photographs), signed by the hand of Cals and dated 1831, went on sale with the label on the back mentioning: "Cals, French school (see the book by Arsène Aalexandre on this Master), student of Cogniet, Doria collection, the Louvre museum holds several paintings (sunset - Study of a woman, lunch at Honfleur etc...), Very beautiful early work".
Our small painting would therefore be a preparatory study/sketch for the painting in the Doria collection.
