"Alphonse Daudet; The Little Thing. Engel Binding For The Publisher Hetzel"
pleasant edition of the famous book by Alphonse Daudet "le petit chose", published around 1880 by Maison Hetzel. The engravings are by Phylippoteaux, and the percaline binding is made by the Engel workshop. The publisher Hetzel made a specialty of producing a large-scale edition with a luxurious presentation, using remarkable bindings in decorated and stamped cloth. He entrusted this work to the bookbinder Engel who invented many industrial binding processes. The most famous examples are those made for the great Jules Verne. The copy presented here, as always, has some stains on the paper, but the binding is particularly fresh
