The ruins of a castle stand in the background, to the right of the painting. Its turrets stand out against a vast blue sky dotted with clouds, where a few birds are flying.
The foreground, bottom, and center of the painting are occupied by the banks of the river. Many characters are seen there: a man is repairing his boat, while two others, sitting on the ground, are talking with a woman standing near a drying net. On the back bank, we see a man on horseback, three men accompanied by a dog busy with a barrel, and a last one on his boat, which is preparing to dock. Finally, two other men are fishing on the river.
The scene is cheerful, very lively, and clear.
The work is signed Roeser in the lower left corner (difficult to read, see black and white photo). It is in very good, clean condition. There are very slight outcrops of the wooden panel, without any impact on the overall quality of the work. The painting is framed in a modern frame of the old type, in carved wood and painted in a tortoiseshell style.
It is a work by Matthias Roeser, an 18th-century German painter. Roeser trained in Strasbourg with Loutherbourg. He was admitted as a member of the Académie Saint Luc in 1771. He worked for two years as a restorer at the Louvre Museum. In this capacity, he restored several paintings by Rembrandt.
