Around ruined buildings, in front of a grandiose landscape, several groups of people carry out peaceful activities, at sunset. Men are gathered in the background under the trees. Women are busy near their tents. A group of three other women, with children, are chatting by a fire, in the foreground. Chickens peck at the ground.
The whole exudes calm and tranquility.
The brushstrokes are light, quick, and full of detail.
The work is signed A. Delacroix in the lower left corner. It is located and dated 1850 in the lower right corner. It is in very good, clean condition.
The painting is presented in a beautiful antique stuccoed wooden frame, which bears a plaque with the painter's name. The frame is in good overall condition, with some minor gilding retouching.
This work was created by Auguste Delacroix, a French painter born in 1809 in Boulogne-sur-Mer. He became known for his seaside scenes and seascapes on the one hand, and for his orientalist works on the other. Auguste Delacroix actually embarked on a trip to North Africa in 1849, for several years. In the last years of his life, Auguste Delacroix suffered from paralysis that forced him to paint with his left hand.
He was a well-known painter during his lifetime, as much for his paintings as for his watercolors. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1835 to 1865, receiving several awards.
Works by Auguste Delacroix can be found in French public collections: Musée des Beaux-Arts in La Rochelle, Boulogne-sur-mer, Reims, Rennes, Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée in Marseille.
