Ovoid balsam jar topped with a long neck constricted at the base, ending in flat, slightly hemmed lips. Blown glass with multicolored and pearly iridescence, good overall condition. Roman period, Mediterranean basin, first century BC, second century AD. 11.5 × 6 cm Provenance: Former auction, Millon Paris Balsam jars, or “unguentaria,” were containers used to store and contain perfumed oils and other aromatic substances. Made of blown glass, they were associated with personal care practices and purification rituals. Their ovoid shape with a constricted neck was ideal for preserving the quality of the substances they contained.
