Jacques Sokol - Provence Landscape

Jacques Roland Sokol was a French landscape painter of Polish descent. Born on September 3, 1933, in Loches (Indre-et-Loire, France), he developed his artistic skills through self-taught training, first under the guidance of his father and later with Mathurin Méheut from 1947.

In 1960, he settled in Senlis (Oise) while balancing his military career in the air force with his passion for painting. A regular participant in the Salon des Artistes Français, he exhibited widely in France and abroad, gaining recognition for his evocative landscapes. His work evolved from abstract compositions to impressionism, before adopting a darker, more somber aesthetic towards the end of his life.

Sokol’s paintings celebrate the landscapes of Brittany, Provence, Auvergne, and Oise, capturing their unique atmosphere with vivid colors and textured brushwork. He passed away on January 23, 2023, in Nogent-sur-Oise at the age of 89, leaving behind a rich legacy of expressive and atmospheric landscape art.
