Rare Pair of Antique Derby Porcelain Figurines, Crown Mark, Late 18th Century, c. 1780s
This exceptional pair of antique Derby porcelain figurines dates from the end of the 18th century and showcases the finest craftsmanship of early English porcelain production. The hand-modelled and hand-painted figures depict a charming boy and girl dressed in traditional 18th-century attire, seated on raised, florally decorated Rococo-style bases adorned with scroll moulding, greenery, and applied flowers.
The boy, dressed in a cobalt blue jacket with gilt highlights, holds a basket overflowing with fruits and raises an apple in playful delight. The girl, wearing a vivid yellow skirt with fine flower patterns and a pink-ribboned bonnet, presents a basket brimming with finely modelled flowers. Their natural postures, animated facial expressions, and intricate clothing details speak of the exceptional skill and artistry of the Derby manufactory at the time.
Both figures are richly enamelled in a vibrant palette dominated by dark blue, yellow, green, and pink, with exquisite attention to fine detail and extensive gilded accents. The red crown mark under the bases dates these figurines to the prestigious period at the Nottingham Road factory.
These pieces would make an outstanding addition to collections of Royal Crown Derby porcelain, 18th-century English porcelain figurines, Georgian decorative arts, or Rococo Revival interior décor. Ideal for display in cabinets, mantelpieces, or period settings.
Historical Background
The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company is the oldest surviving English porcelain manufacturer, founded circa 1750. Derby porcelain quickly gained acclaim for its high-quality tableware, vases, and especially figurines, which often featured lively scenes, naturalistic modelling, bright enamels, and rich gilding. Under William Duesbury’s leadership from 1756, the factory became renowned for its technical excellence and decorative style, rivalling even the best European manufactories. Today, early Derby porcelain remains highly prized by collectors for its historical importance and artistic beauty.
