"Deposition Of Christ"
Marcello Venusti – Mazzo di Valtellina, Sondrio, circa 1512 - Rome 1579Deposition of Christ16th centuryOil on canvas; cm 101 x 77 This work is accompanied by an expertise by Prof.ssa Francesca Parrilla, curator of the Vatican Museums in Rome. In the expertise, available upon request, the following masters are named several times, precisely: - Michelangelo, 17 times; - Sebastiano del Piombo 15 times. According to Prof.ssa Parrilla, the origin of the painting is a painting by Sebastiano del Piombo derived from a drawing (cartonetto) by Michelangelo. Based on the above, Prof.ssa Parrilla and others organized an exhibition in Rome from October 2019 to January 2020 at Palazzo Barberini entitled: "Michelangelo in color" where a painting like ours appeared (painting belonging to the Accademia San Luca) see for details: https://www.finestresullarte.info/en/exhibitions/rome-an-exhibition-at-palazzo-barberini-on-the-dialogue-between-michelangelo-and-his-followers-with-never-before-seen-comparisons The above painting also appears in the book derived from the above exhibition, “Michelangelo a Colori” by Francesca Parrilla and Massimo Pirondini, pages 100-105. At present, there are a total of three known originals/replicas, including ours; one at the Accademia San Luca – it was a gift and originally attributed to Sebastiano del Piombo – and another in private hands sold by Christie's in July 2017. And the Museum's references in the above appraisal to other works of art that have characteristics in common with our painting are: - Accademia San Luca, Rome - Ashmolean, Oxford - Galerie du Palais Royal, Paris - Albertina Museum, Vienna. The painting has been lightly restored as it was already in good condition. This painting is currently in our warehouse in England.
