"Young Princess In A Landscape. Attributed To Henri & Charles Beaubrun (17th Century)"
Oil on prepared oak panel17th century frame in carved, gilded wood, and painted in imitation of marble (very beautiful model)Total dimensions: 54 x 44 cm. The panel alone: 37 x 27 cm.The painter probably portrayed Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier, Daughter of Gaston d'Orléans, granddaughter of Henri IV and first cousin of Louis XIV. She is depicted in a wooded landscape at sunset. Richly dressed, she holds a small dog by a very ornate leash, whose head appears at the edge of the frame at the bottom of the composition. It is very difficult to give with certainty the identity of the model, because she fits into the canons of both beauty and clothing of the time and I would say that she looks exactly the same! Our painting, executed around 1650 is attributed to "Beaubrun". Henri, born in 1603 in Amboise and died in 1677 in Paris, and his cousin Charles Beaubrun, born in 1604 in Amboise and died in 1692 in Paris, were French painters active at the court of Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV, specializing in portraits of the queens of France. Their works were mainly produced jointly. Their collaboration was such that it is impossible to differentiate their contribution. Their individual works are thus jointly attributed to them. They executed numerous official portraits. A few of their paintings are preserved at Versailles. (Queen Maria Theresa, Louise Ollier de Nointel and at the Prado (Anne of Austria; the Grande Mademoiselle, 1655; the Grand Dauphin, 1663), as well as several engravings after lost portraits. Their style and their fine workmanship are linked to the tradition of portrait drawings of the 16th century with a slightly solemn note which undoubtedly comes from Frans Pourbus the Younger. Together, from 1630 to 1675, they portrayed Louis XIV, the queens of France and many members of the royal family who appreciated their manner, influenced by the Nordic school, which represented them in a flattering way. The Château de Bussy-Rabutin has works by these painters and an exhibition organized jointly with the Château de Versailles has brought this painting back into the spotlight: "The Gallery of Beauties of Louis XIV" from June 30 to October 14, 2018.
