Object description :

"René Gabriel (1890-1950) - Sideboard"
  • Unmissable sideboard from the early 1950s by René Gabriel (1899-1950).
  • Called “disaster furniture” or reconstruction furniture, this production was so successful that it continued until the 1960s.
  • The present model most certainly dates from the end of the 1940s or the beginning of the 1950s at the latest.
  • A classic “Antiques of the Future” ...
  • Furniture treated and in good used condition, there is a light stain on the top. I have not removed it or touched the patina of the top. This will be according to the wishes of the buyer. Hence an attractive purchase price
  • 97 cm high x 47 cm deep x 154 cm wide

"René Gabriel followed a theoretical training at the Germain Pilon school and at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. In 1919, a year after the end of his studies, he presented at the Salon d'Automne the result of his research oriented towards industrial production. A major figure in decoration, he was selected for the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925, participating in the creation of the French embassy." "In 1944, for his knowledge of industrial methods of economical furniture production, René Gabriel was appointed by the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning and created emergency furniture sold to disaster victims at a symbolic price (then in ration tickets)." "He was elected president of the Society of Decorative Artists from 1945. He ran a workshop teaching at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1946. He collaborated with Jean Fressinet for the 1948 Salon des Arts Ménagers (series furniture section)."
