Antoine Court de Gébelin (1725-1784) was an influential figure during the 18th century, deeply involved in theology, mythological studies, and linguistics. He was born near Nîmes and was the son of the Protestant pastor Antoine Court, who founded a seminary to secretly train pastors due to the persecution of Protestantism in France. Court de Gébelin was a freemason and a member of several prestigious academic societies, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and various French academies.

Antoine Louis Romanet (1742-1807), the artist, was a skilled engraver and miniature painter, known for his works exhibited at the Salon de la Correspondance. His detailed and refined style is reflected in this portrait, which captures the intellectual aura of Court de Gébelin during a period of significant scholarly contributions.
