"Museum - Anthropomorphic Snuffbox With System - Napoleon Carved And Studded Wood - Folk Art"
Mid-19th century – France Massif Central or Eastern France Anthropomorphic snuffbox in carved wood depicting two busts of soldiers in uniform, joined back to back in a compact and expressive composition. One, wearing a bicorn hat and adorned with an insignia, clearly evokes Napoleon I. The other, more discreet and in simplified costume, could represent an opposing figure: an anonymous soldier, an allegorical enemy, or even a diplomat of a rival regime. Some will see this as a satirical interpretation of the Napoleon / Metternich couple, a popular representation of a geopolitical opposition frozen in wood. Each figure is adorned with brass nails representing buttons, decorations, or military symbols. The system mechanism, hidden under the base, allows a small tobacco compartment to be opened. The object, both functional and critical, testifies to the popular verve and biting humor found in sculptures of rural tradition. The set is part of a tradition of 19th century peasant sculpture, where everyday objects become supports for political or social narration, nourished by the collective imagination and the memory of conflicts. Condition: Good general condition with a beautiful patina. Functional opening mechanism. Tiny chip on the edge of the base.
