"Louis XV Louis XVI Transition Period Armchair With Frame - Au Fer Gm Marks (princely?) "
Beautiful ceremonial armchair of princely quality in richly carved wood. Model à la reine, it is mounted on a frame to alternate summer and winter upholstery. Our armchair dates from the Louis XV period in the late 1760s or early 1770s. Its overall shape is still very Louis XV, with acanthus leaf and ribbon motifs heralding the Louis XVI style. High-quality Parisian work, reminiscent of the productions of Nicolas Heurtaut. Our seat is not stamped, but the work and quality are comparable and make this attribution possible. Under the belt, an iron mark GM reminiscent of that of the Garde Meuble Royal. In the absence of initials under a crown, we do not know which prince this armchair could have been made for. In the rebate, another mark or partial stamp LAS (?). Beautiful amateur chair, the mysteries of which remain to be discovered. The presence of dowels under the front crossbar suggests that it was perhaps intended for a "winter furniture" in velvet as we present it and a "summer furniture" caned (?), which would explain the use of the unupholstered armrests. We had this beautiful collector's chair covered with a coupon of ruby red silk velvet, dating from the end of the 19th century and in new condition. The armchair has been re-lacquered. Old restorations (reinforcing brackets), splices at the ends of the legs. Total width 73.5cm Depth 70cm Total height 104.5cm Seat height 42cm
