Royal Dux Bohemia porcelain centrepiece of water bearer in giant clam shell, c. 1920s
This large and striking Art Nouveau / Neoclassical porcelain centrepiece by Royal Dux Bohemia features a serene water bearer seated on naturalistic rocky outcrop, pouring from a golden amphora into an enormous stylised giant clam shell. Made in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s, the piece exemplifies the superb technical skill and naturalistic influence characteristic of Royal Dux's interwar output.
The figure is sculpted in the round and finished in a combination of matt and glossy glazes. The stylised drapery of the woman’s cobalt blue gown contrasts with the matte ivory porcelain of her skin, creating a luminous finish that draws attention to the classical pose and flowing forms. The giant shell is finished in a realistic palette of warm ochres and sandy tones, echoing the influence of both Symbolist romanticism and marine-inspired decorative art of the early 20th century.
The dramatic composition and sensuous palette would complement interior styles ranging from Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, Classical Revival, and coastal or marine-themed interiors. Ideal as a statement decorative object, it also functions as a shallow bowl, perfect for use as a fruit bowl, table centrepiece, or display vessel for floral arrangements or dried botanicals.
This piece is fully marked to the base with impressed model number 1047, Royal Dux triangle mark (c.1918–1945), and green ‘Made in Czechoslovakia’ stamp.
