First edition of this important work by Voltaire. This text aims to rehabilitate Calas, a Protestant falsely accused and executed for having murdered his son in order to prevent the latter from converting to Catholicism. In this treatise on tolerance, Voltaire calls for tolerance between religions and targets religious fanaticism. Handwritten pages have been inserted into a later binding (19th century).
