"Franz Kobell: Italian Landscape "
Lovely little pen drawing certainly representing an Italian landscape, made in the 18th century. The drawing is not signed, but its very precise style, deeply inspired by the masters of the 17th century, its format also, allow us to attribute this work without much doubt to Franz Kobell. Franz Innocenz Josef Kobell (1749-1822) has indeed left a large number of drawings, which allows convincing comparisons to be made. Born in Manheim, he trained at the drawing academy of his hometown. Noticed by the Elector Charles Theodore, the latter granted him a scholarship to travel to Italy, where he remained from 1779 to 1784. He went to Rome. His meeting with Goethe left a deep imprint on him. He returned to Bavaria, to Munich, where Charles Theodore officially appointed him, painter to the court. He left more than twenty thousand drawings. His style announces romanticism, tinged with the influences of Le Lorrain or Poussin. Our bucolic sketch, in very good condition, is presented on a blue passe-partout with fillets, in a pitch pine frame bordered with rosewood Dimensions of the drawing: 17 cm x 12 cm
