"Despres Barbizon School Around 1870 “woman With Bundles”"
This oil on canvas signed “Despres” depicts a forest scene, probably in the undergrowth, with soft light piercing through the towering trees. Two figures can be seen in the center, a lady carrying a bundle of wood accompanied by a child. The style is realistic, with particular attention paid to the play of light and shadow, as well as to the details of the foliage and tree trunks. This type of scene was typical of landscape painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The restored frame is in the Louis XV or Louis XVI style, with plant motifs and fairly elaborate moldings, which adds a touch of elegance to the work. This could indicate that the work dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, or that the frame was added later to correspond to a classical aesthetic taste. Signed lower right.
