Attilio Gartmann, born in Vercelli in 1877, trained at the Art Institute in his hometown and later studied at the Brera Academy in Milan under Enrico Butti, whose teaching had a great impact on his artistic production. Most of his activity took place in Vercelli, where he created the war memorials of several towns, including Cigliano, Borgo Vercelli, Trino, Santhià and Vercelli itself, in the years immediately following World War I. In Vercelli's public park, he created the monumental fountain representing the allegory of agriculture. Gartmann was a precise sculptor, attentive to realism but also sensitive to the suggestions of Art Nouveau aesthetics. He passed away in Vercelli in 1928.
