"Self-portrait Of Paul Chabas C1930 Oil On Wood Panel"
This self-portrait was painted at the height of the talent and fame of this painter, more famous at the time than Claude Monet. A former student of the Académie Julian, we recognize the influence of his master, the painter William Bougereau. Recognized by his peers for his talent, he was promoted to Commander of the Legion of Honor, Director of the Institut de France, and then President of the Society of French Artists. His works are found in the greatest museums of the world such as the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. We can see the preparatory drawing for this painting, quickly sketched in charcoal and enhanced with chalk. We can see that in our oil self-portrait he is still holding in his right hand (seen in a mirror) the white chalk used for this sketch. We can see his photographic portrait where, although much younger, he is easily recognizable. We also present two of his characteristic works, Joyful Plays and At the Corner of the Table.
