"Olifant Calling Horn Africa 20th."
The term oliphant (whose etymology comes from oliphant for elephant), designates a trunk, a single-note "musical" instrument that can be modulated by the blower and was used during battles. Carved most of the time from an ivory tusk, examples are the pride of our museums, the most famous being that of Roland during the Battle of Roncevaux. If those of antiquity had a mouthpiece at the small end, those found in Africa are generally equipped with a lateral mouthpiece. The example we are presenting today is carved from a horn, certainly coming from West Africa (Gabon? Congo?) and has a beautiful patina, proof of its antiquity. Small in size, 32 X 7cm at the widest. Good condition, first half of the 20th century.
