Original piece.(from the photograph of the "Holy Shroud of Turin", May 1931, by Giuseppe Enrie (1886-1961)
The first photograph of the Shroud of Turin was taken in 1898 by Secondo Pia, an amateur photographer. The quality of the photograph was limited because of his skills, the technology available at that time and the fact that it was taken through the protective glass.
In May 1931, the Shroud, was displayed publicly for the first time without its protective glass, in Honor of the wedding of Umberto II to the Belgian princess Maria Jos.
On the occasion, the Vatican commissioned Giuseppe Enrie, a professional photographer to take a new set of photographs of the Shroud. Enrie made twelve negatives of the Shroud and he recorded his methodology in great detail. The result of his work was a far superior reproduction of the image of the Shroud and thus produced high-quality pictures for the first time.
