"Joseph Rulot - Beer Mug"
Preparatory drawingCharcoal on paperA fervent Walloon, Liège artist and sculptor of sentiment, Joseph Rulot remains little known in Belgium. With a production whose major projects were never completed or were destroyed, our sheet constitutes a precious testimony allowing us to approach the creative ambition of this atypical sculptor, between Symbolism and Idealism. To bring a timeless and dreamlike dimension to the drawing, the artist favors the use of charcoal, a medium capable of rendering an almost sketched blur, between shadow and light. Accented by simple lines and shapes that do not insist on detail, this modeling is reminiscent of the non-fini of his bozzetti. Rulot expresses in his works a rejection of a tangible reality giving way to the spiritual dimension of the human soul in its most essential form.Bibliography: Alicia VANDEVILLEJoseph Louis Rulot (1853-1919), sculptor of feeling – Master's thesis presented under the direction of Julie Bawin Volume I, University of Liège, Faculty of Philosophy and Letters Department of Historical Sciences History of Art and Archaeology, 2019-2020.
