Open Gorjin (pack bag) Shahsavan Iran wool, cotton warp, circa 1960. Very good condition.

Two techniques used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the bag) and kilims with bands (originally, back of the bag). Beautiful harmony of colors in both the soumak and the kilim.
*Soumak: wrapped weft weaving technique (embroidery), called suzan in Iran, suzani meaning 'embroidered with a needle'.

SHAHSAVAN (those who love the Shah) Shahsavan: title granted by Shah Abbas the Great (1588-1629), Safavid sovereign, in opposition to the Qizilbashs (red heads). The Qizilbashs: confederation formed by several Turkish groups of Turkmen origin were at the origin of the Safavid dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite). The greedy and corrupt Qizilbashs wanted to gain power. It was for this reason that Shah Abbas appealed to all ethnic groups who wished to form a confederation to oppose the Qizilbash. The Shahsavan confederation was born. It consisted of a significant number of Qizilbash who had remained loyal to Shah Abbas, Persian-speaking tribes (Tajik: not Turkish) as well as Kurds. In exchange for their loyalty, the Safavid rulers granted privileges to the Shahsavans. Safavid: dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite) and which ended in 1732.
