Pair of obelisks
Colored marbles
Dimensions: H. 50 (cm.)
Modern work Rare and decorative pair of obelisks in marble samples of five varieties: black from Mazy (Belgium), green from Genoa, red from Languedoc, white from Carrara and yellow from Sienna.
The ancient obelisk and its use Originally monolithic monuments, tapering quadrangular in shape and ending in a point called a pyramidion, obelisks were in use from the beginning of the second millennium BC. Erected in front of temples to honor the gods, in particular Ra, divinity of the Sun, they symbolized divine light and the stability of royal power.
Due to fascination by the Antique, many of these monoliths were brought back to Europe. They gave free rein to the imagination of various artists and craftsmen. As early as the 1770s, boxes of clocks reproducing their proportions were marketed and met with great success. Reductions of Roman models were produced in precious materials, not to mention idealized graphic representations. Truly timeless, the re-use of this form has existed in every era, as witnessed by Sandro Petti's lamps for Jansen.
Condition report: minor wear.
