Antique Roman Plewkiewicz & Co silver-plated basket with cobalt blue glass liner (c. 1900)

A fine late 19th- to early 20th-century silver-plated table basket by Roman Plewkiewicz & Co, featuring a deeply cast openwork mount with intricate Rococo Revival and Neoclassical ornamentation. The pierced frame is decorated with garland swags of flowers and fruit, suspended by ribbon-tied motifs between trellis latticework panels. The richly moulded structure is raised on four ornate scrolled rocaille feet and fitted with a swing handle detailed with classical beaded borders.

The removable liner is made of deep sapphire blue glass with a scalloped rim, complementing the elaborate silver-plated mount beautifully.

Ideal for use as a table centrepiece, bonbon basket, bread basket, or for fruit service. A highly decorative piece for collectors of antique silverware, Rococo decorative arts, or refined period interiors.

Historical Background

Roman Plewkiewicz & Co was a prominent silverware manufacturer established in Warsaw in 1886. In 1886, the German firm Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) acquired the company to expand into the Russian market, completing semi-finished products imported from Germany. The firm operated under the name Plewkiewicz i Ska (& Co.) until about 1935. Plewkiewicz pieces are known for their fine quality and intricate decoration, reflecting fashionable European styles of the late 19th century. Today, antique silverwares bearing the Plewkiewicz mark are highly regarded by collectors for their craftsmanship and historical significance.

Condition

Good antique condition. Some wear to the silver-plating consistent with age and use. The glass liner has a long stable crack with small chips at either end. Light wobble to the base, but stable when displayed.
