A sketch is, according to the definition of the dictionary of the French Academy, a small-format painting where the touch, quick and removed, must render both the drawing and the color, and which is intended to quickly fix the impression left by a figure, a scene, a landscape.
This painting was purchased on May 3, 1909 by a private individual, directly from Armand Guéry, in his studio at 135 bis rue de Rome. The owner then offered it to Marthe Garreau on the occasion of her birthday, July 29, 1922. Painted on the motif, this pochade represents a rural scene in a style very inspired by the Barbizon School. Let us recall that a pochade is, according to the definition of the dictionary of the French Academy, a small-format painting where the touch, quick and lively, must render both the drawing and the color, and which is intended to quickly fix the impression left by a figure, a scene, a landscape.
With quick strokes, Armand GUÉRY has gracefully restored a wooden mill, some haystacks from the previous season which stand in a field where the ears of wheat are turning golden, a sky which is ablaze at sunset. But the storm is coming and the shepherd urges his flock to return to the sheepfold as quickly as possible, before the rain begins to fall. Although painted in a few quick brushstrokes, once again, this oil on panel affirms the very experienced talent of Armand GUÉRY and allows him to subtly develop a whole palette of yellow-orange and brown-green cameos with lightness and sobriety. Pleasing the subject, Armand GUÉRY executed a larger canvas which he presented at the 1907 Salon under the n°759 and the title "Sunset with the Approaches of the Storm; - Champagne. This painting met with certain success and was bought by Rama V, King of Siam (today Thailand), who reigned from 1868 to 1910.
