Clock with the "Painter Raphael" in gilded and patinated bronzes Restoration period 19th century Dimensions Height 48 cm Width 36 cm Depth 13 cm Superb and imposing clock in chased and gilded bronzes (matt and shiny gold) with a dark brown patina, representing the painter Raphael. Dressed in Renaissance clothes, he sits cross-legged and in profile on a rock and a rockery, a pencil in his hand, absorbed in the design of a sketch on a board - probably evoking the sketch of his self-portrait. A palette and brushes are arranged to his left, while to his right rests a roll of painting canvas depicting the Sistine Madonna. A very beautiful dial with a silver patina, in excellent condition, blends harmoniously into the center of the rock. It has Roman numerals for the hours and a railway for the minutes with a ring decorated with a delicate interlacing pattern. The whole rests on a sumptuous rectangular base with several levels. On a flat band is arranged a thick frieze encircling the base, richly decorated with appliques of stylized acanthus leaves and ova housing allegories of the different Arts of Music, Sculpture, and Painting, arranged with rich volutes and moldings complete the ornamentation. The clock is supported by front feet sculpted with antique masks and heads of Cerberus, embellished with rich moldings with gadroons and plant motifs. The expression of the figure is full of life, powerful and balanced. The bronze bears witness to a remarkable execution and chiseled finish, enhanced with exceptional mercury gilding.
