Christ is nailed to the cross in a disfiguring posture. His head has fallen backwards and his lips are open to the visible breath of death. Instead of the abbreviation "INRI", which stands for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", the words of the Catholic Mass "Sursum corda" are inscribed on the trunk of the cross, which Christ himself seems to be articulating. The celebrant's "Sursum corda", "Lift up your hearts", is followed by the response "Habemus ad Dominum", "We lift them up to the Lord". It is precisely this attitude of being with the Crucified One with the heart that the nun illustrates. Her head is penetrated by the Corpus Christi, so that she looks into an indeterminate distance with the eyes of faith.
