"Chevallier Mines Compass, Circa 1830"
Mining compass and bearing compass by Chevallier, circa 1830 Rare form of a mining compass in mahogany and brass and bearing, on the back of the box, the label of "A. Chevallier Ing. Opticien", that is to say Augustin Chevallier, known as Ingéneiur Chevallier. The compass is therefore datable to the 1830s before Chevallier died in 1841. This form of mining compass and bearing compass is uncommon. The instrument can be used stretched on a wire, the compass mounted on the gimbal in the middle of the mahogany rectangle as a mining compass; or as a bearing compass with the compass held by four brass wedges and the whole mounted on its unscrewable ball joint. Elegant mining topography instrument circa 1830. Perfect condition, in its original box. The mahogany rectangle measures 15x10cm.
