Jean Benner attributed to. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard "the captive" unsigned. French school. 21.8 X 21.4 cm (43.5 X 43 overall). Bears on the back on the cardboard a label attributing the work to Benner. Jean Benner was born in Mulhouse in 1836 and died in Paris in 1909. He is the twin brother of Emmanuel Benner (1836-1896) himself a painter. In Paris, he was a student of Ernest Hébert (1817-1908) and Léon Bonnat (1833-1922). He debuted at the Salon in 1857. He was a friend of Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905). In 1866 he visited Capri (Italy) where he stayed several times and which strongly inspired his art. Many museums hold his works. Period black lacquered wooden frame. Good condition. 1200 euros.
