Wooden Altar Base Or Predella

Important altar base or predella, made of sculpted, carved and gilded wood, dating back to the 18th century, of Italian origin, most likely from the southern area. The work has an inverted pyramidal structure with molded frames and a rich decoration with vegetal motifs and recurring volutes, of evident Baroque inspiration.

The phytomorphic decoration, with acanthus leaves, blooming flowers and flowing curls, develops with great skill around the four sides, suggesting a liturgical origin and a support function for a processional statue or a sacred artefact. The corners are embellished with volute-sculpted elements that recall stylized Corinthian capitals.
