Object description :

"Claude Galle: Rare Mercury Chariot Clock, Empire Period."
Rare can take on its full meaning here, of all the chariot clocks, that of Mercury is the most difficult to find. Designed, chiseled and marketed by the bronzier Claude Galle (1759-1815) at the beginning of the 19th century, this clock in gilt bronze with brown patina, for the horse, was created by Croutelle the elder. Indeed, a preparatory pen drawing with watercolor highlights inscribed under the name and dated: Croutelle ainé, n° 126 of the year 1803, is kept at the National Library (Cabinet des Estampes).

This magnificent clock represents Mercury, standing on a carriage taking the form of a bale of cotton and four wheels of fortune, holding in his left hand his caduceus and in the other, the reins of his horse.

The patinated bronze animal wears a saddle and a chased collar of flowers in gilded bronze.
On the rectangular base, a decoration with the attributes of the mythological god: garlands of flowers, horns of plenty, caduceus and laurel leaves. On the sides, a decoration with the attributes of maritime trade: very finely chiseled anchors and tridents.
The whole rests on four spinning feet.

Revised movement, in perfect working order, with an eight-day power reserve, chimes on the hours and half-hours on a gong, wire balance suspension and Breguet hands.

Very good condition, original gilding.
Empire period.
