Object description :

"Charrat Louis - Bouquet Of Flowers In A Blue Vase - Oil On Canvas - Signed"
A still life painted in the 1930s and 1940s depicting a bouquet of wildflowers in a blue vase on a red and white checkered tablecloth. The bouquet fills the entire canvas. Behind it, we can see burgundy wallpaper.
The whole thing is cheerful and vibrantly colored. The brushstrokes are vigorous.
The work is signed lower right. It is in very good condition: some discreet cracks in the thickness of the painting, and a restoration visible on the back (invisible on the front). It is placed in a white American box type frame, which brings out the vibrant colors of the work.

The artist
Louis Charrat is a Lyon painter of portraits, intimate scenes, still lifes and landscapes.
He was trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in this city, a student of Régis Deygas and Georges Décôte. He won the Prix de Paris in 1933, and a scholarship which allowed him to continue his training in the capital. But following family problems, he returned to Lyon in 1934.
Until 1945, he took care of his father, who was in fragile health, and spent most of his time in the family apartment. He then painted a majority of still lifes and interior scenes. The work we are offering here dates from this period.
From 1945, he He traveled extensively, particularly in Provence and Italy. He received numerous awards and prizes. He developed a passion for the art of stained glass, creating the stained-glass windows for the Saint-Bonaventure church in Lyon.
In 1965, he was elected a member of the Academy of Lyon. In 1969, he was president of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts, succeeding Jean Dulac. He taught at the Lyon School of Fine Arts from 1968. His students included the famous illustrator Jean Claverie. Upon his death in 1971, Louis Charrat was replaced by Jean Fusaro.

Many of Louis Charrat's works have been the subject of public auctions. An exhibition was dedicated to him at the Town Hall of the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon in 2023.
