Early 19th Century Composition Snuff Box & Miniature Forming A Figure In Hair

Superb composition box decorated with a hair-like number.

The box is round, in a blue-grey composition with a finely guilloché motif of semicircles and pilasters on a background of parallel lines.

The lid is adorned with a large hair-like composition beneath domed glass. The number MG is depicted in scrollwork, surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves.

The use of hair forming a number indicates that this box was most likely given as a token of love.

Hair-like work has existed for a very long time but was very popular in the 19th century as a memorial to a loved one or a deceased loved one.

The composition is enhanced by a gilded metal rim.

The interior of the box is rimmed with tortoiseshell.

A very beautiful box with a very finely crafted composition body, enhanced by the extremely delicate hair-like number.
