Arsène CHABANIAN (1864–1949)

Born in Karin, Turkey, to Armenian parents, Arsène Chabanian showed talent for drawing and painting from an early age. At the age of 10, he was sent to Venice to study at the Armenian college run by the Mekhitarist Fathers, where he took painting classes.
He later traveled to Russia to meet the painter Ivan Aivazovsky, whom he greatly admired. Aivazovsky invited him to stay for a few days. After observing his work, Aivazovsky encouraged him to pursue painting and advised him to go to France to further his artistic education.

In France, he joined Gustave Moreau’s studio and studied at the Académie Julian under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens.
Preferring to paint en plein air rather than in the confines of a studio, Chabanian traveled to Brittany and the Vendée, where he painted seascapes that he later exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français and other exhibitions in France and abroad, including in London, Belgium, Egypt, and at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris.

Highly appreciated for both his pastels and oil paintings, critics wrote extensively about his work, praising his clear talent for capturing the sea and its moods.
His artworks are held in many museums, including the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, as well as international institutions in Washington, Philadelphia, Buenos Aires, and Sydney.
He was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1910 in recognition of his contributions as an academic officer of the Society of Marine Painters.
He passed away in Paris in 1949 at the age of 85.
