Modern work The ancient obelisk and its reuse Originally monolithic monuments, quadrangular and tapered in shape, ending in a point called a pyramidion, they were used from the beginning of the second millennium BC. Erected in front of temples to honor the gods, notably Ra, the deity of the Sun, they symbolized divine light and the stability of royal power. Fascination with antiquity obliges, several of these monoliths were brought back to Europe. They gave free rein to the imagination of various artists and craftsmen. From the 1770s, clock cases reproducing their proportions were marketed and met with great success. Reductions of Roman models were made in precious materials, not to mention idealized graphic representations. Truly timeless, the reuse of this form exists in all eras, as evidenced by the lamps by Sandro Petti for the Jansen house. Condition report: excellent condition, very minor wear
