"Christ In Ivory - 18th Century"
This ivory-carved Christ on the Cross, sculpted in the 18th century, powerfully embodies both the suffering and spirituality of the Crucifixion. At the height of his torment, the artist masterfully conveys the anguish overwhelming the Savior, whose expressive face, eyes turned heavenward, appears to simultaneously implore the Father and accept his fate. The anatomical details are rendered with striking realism: the protruding ribs, the tension in the outstretched arms, and the subtly visible veins contribute to the poignant sensitivity of the piece, once again demonstrating the sculptor's skill. The short and modest perizonium, naturally draped, enhances the purity of the composition and, through its simplicity, does not distract the viewer from meditating on Christ’s suffering body. The natural veining of the ivory further amplifies the expressiveness and sensuality of the work, which once adorned a domestic altar or a private chapel.
