Antoine-Edmond Joinville trained at the Beaux-arts in Paris. He was a member of the second generation of classical landscape painters working in Italy with Edouard Bertin, Caruelle d’Aligny, Alexandre Desgoffe and Corot. He first visited Italy in 1824 and produced several views of Genoa, Venice, Rome, Naples between 1831 and 1848. During this period, Joinville travelled at least once to North Africa. He worked on commission for the Duchesse de Berry, producing a number of views of Sicily for her, and also exhibiting some of these back in Paris at the Salon.
